EDIBLE OASIS

This urban edible garden in the Mt. Baker neighborhood of Seattle is a long-time favorite. Our deep relationship with this garden started in 2016, spans across two different home owners, and established trust for several design and build projects. We continue to care for this garden on a regular schedule.

Our likeminded clients requested additional space for edible gardening and less turf grass. This large corner lot initially presented a few challenges. Wide open spaces with varied terrain resulted in many weeds and a lack of overall coherence and transition. In 2020, we designed and built an edible garden and installed infrastructure to connect different zones. We carefully espaliered fruit trees for accessibility, planted evergreen fruiting shrubs, and increased the number of raised beds for annual food production from two to seven. In 2022, we designed and installed a welcoming park strip. In 2024, we seeded and cultivated an alternative eco-lawn in the backyard.

The result is a productive garden with hardworking plants that suppress weeds and attract pollinators. A vibrant tapestry of sedum and blue star creeper covers the understory and ties the space together like an area rug. Our clients truly use this garden and enjoy harvesting abundant fruits and vegetables.
